, 2009-07-09
For the UNESCO International Year of Astronomy, the International Centre Ipazia-UNESCO is offering a research programme entitled “Women and Astronomy, from Ipazia to today” to academic institutes in Piedmont and Italy. The programme will be offered as part of the academic year 2009-2010 in collaboration with the Region of Piedmont-Chair of Studies, MUIR – Regional Schools Office for Piedmont, University and Polytechnic of Turin; SIOI Piedmont and Valley of Aosta and with the National Institute of Nuclear Physics of Turin and the Planetarium of Turin.
The programme aims to recognise female excellence in Astronomy in Piedmont and in Italy. Specifically, attention is given to the value of Astronomy and to the scientific figures who have dealt with it over the centuries, with particular attention to the female role. The activities also offer the opportunity to orient students from the Superior Institutes of Piedmont towards scientific matters.
The general conclusion of the initiatives will be the presentation of the Observatory of the city of Turin so that the Observatory can be rightfully appreciated and included on the list of observatories of astronomy which are proposed to enter into the network of historical Observatories recognised by UNESCO.
The programme will also be an introduction to ESOF (EuroScience Open Forum) 2010, which will take place in Turin, European City of Science.
